Britta said I should upload these...

I like making collages. It is very soothing and relaxing, and it is a great waste of time!

This is the front of a card I made for my mama for mother's day:

I made this for a friend of mine to thank him for getting me Christopher Walken's The Prophecy trilogy. I watched the first movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. As you can see, he enjoys the more disgusting things in life, like alcohol:

Now I am going to sleep, Britta. You should too!

<lj-embed id="2" />
OH MAN. Best television show ever.
This show has Biz Markie teaching kids how to beat-box, members of the Aquabats dancing around, and the love of my life, Elijah Wood, doing a dancey dance. Why did they not have this when I was a kid? I never watched live action shows (other than the Nickelodeon game shows which ruled) because they were all bullshit. Like Sesame Street? wtf. I guess the Muppets reruns were alright, but this show blows my mind. And my whole floor thinks I'm on drugs cause I've been watching it at 10:30 every morning and on youtube. Oh and the next time there's a dance party at usc, guess how I'm gonna dance.

Wow. When Bruce Springsteen's Seeger Sessions cd came out I listened to it straight for about two months. It was played out, to say the least. But now is the glorious time when it's become fresh again. I would say that in about a month my mother is going to lose her mind, but until then it will be on repeat. My mother is from North Jersey. Those people worship Springsteen. But yes, I will listen to it too much even for her. Well I'm sick of The River so tit for tat.
The sound of banjo is just so satisfying.

Also: DEADWOOD SEASON THREE DVD.
Today was one of those days when I just want to kick everyone in the face. I have a very distinctive "I want to kick you in the face" look. I gave that look to a whole fuckload of people today. WTF? This is everyone at my school: "OMG A FIRE IS A MILE AWAY WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE. MY MOM IS CALLING ME EVERY HOUR TO MAKE SURE A BIG TUMOR HASN'T ENGULFED MY LUNGS. MY EYES ARE BURNING. MY HOUSE IS GONNA BURN DOWN. OH MY GOD, WHAT IF THERE IS NO ELECTRICITY? I MIGHT AS WELL LIE DOWN AND DIE RIGHT NOW. COMING TO SCHOOL TODAY IS OPTIONAL, WHY AM I HERE? I WANT TO STAY HOME WHERE THE AIR IS JUST AS BAD BUT SITTING ON MY ASS WATCHING FLAVOR OF LOVE IS EASIER ON MY LUNGS THAN WALKING FROM CLASS TO CLASS. I AM GOING TO STAND ON THIS BALCONY AND TALK ABOUT HOW THIS IS BASICALLY THE APOCALYPSE SLASH AN EXCUSE TO BE DRAMATIC."
I'm not an evil person, of course it sucks that there was a fire. Just, come on. If you're gonna feel bad, feel bad for the animals.

Have I studied for ap us? Not one chapter.

Jolene, Jolene, Joleeene, Joleeeeeeeeeene

So no Immaculate Heart next year thanks to the (most likely inebriated) USC admissions office. Weird. Instead I'm going to be spending my time with 22 scary, neurotic overachievers. So it won't really be that different from home, there'll just 22 of them. The woman who runs the program I'm in even has a striking resemblance to my stepmom (and therefore Aileen the serial killer). And she said I have to go to the beach with her. Oh she also said that she once met me when I was a kid and I was eating bread off the floor, which I don't doubt. She said I used to be an "eechh brat"(as she gathered from our one encounter). Haha yeah just like my stepmom (well, if you insert something far more offensive than brat). Eesh what a day. It's pretty cool though cause I get to be there in the year of OJ Mayo which, if the hype is accurate, will be quite legendary.

How does my dad know everybody? I don't get it. I think I have two degrees of separation from the entire human population, at least the interesting people. Apparently my dad bought Wil-Dog of Ozomatli coffee yesterday. During their conversation, my dad learned that Wil-Dog and I went to the same elementary school (32nd street Magnet). AND the man whom he attributes with sparking his musical interest is Mr. Burke, the man who taught me how to dance both the "Achy-Breaky Heart" and "The Chicken Dance", the man whose son bit my sister as a sign of affection. Amazing.

Top 5 2006

Best (more like favorite) Movies
Quinceanera
The Departed
Fast Food Nation (review after the break)
Clerks II
Snakes on a Plane

Best Albums
Bob Dylan - Modern Times
best song - Workingman's Blues #2
Rosewood Thieves - From the Decker House
best song - Los Angeles
Bruce Springsteen - We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions
best song- Mrs. McGrath
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
best song - Dirty Whirl
Manu Katche - Neighbourhood
best song - Take Off and Land

I'd do best books but I didn't really read any that came out in 2006.

There aren't any good new tv shows so, I'll do 5 memorable (good/bad) TV moments:
1. The last minute of the 24 season where you think everything is calm again but some guy jumps out and Jack's ABDUCTED. I almost had a heart attack.

2. Deadwood was cancelled :(
3. I guess I should do a sports list but sports are on tv so here are my sports moments:
- August 13 Russell Martin walk-off homerun in the tenth versus the giants
- September 18 blah bloah everyone knows
- last night was very exciting, and is just going on this list cause it's fresh in my mind but whatever, USC upset Washington in double overtime
- well, the world cup, but specifically...Portugal beating England in free kicks, actually I hate games that go to free kicks, but I hate England's team more. Trinidad and Tobago qualifying. (Sweden sucked. sucked. sucked. sucked. sucked.)
4 and 5. I don't have two more, I don't really watch tv.

best best list:
http://www.papermag.com/?section=article&parid=1720
personal favorite:
Best song to play while dumping your Swedish girlfriend:
"This Piece of Poetry Is Meant to Do Harm," The Ark

Fast Food Nation – Food For Thought
By Elisabeth Gustafson ’08

I consider myself to be an aware person; I’m vegetarian, I belong to PETA [lie], and I’ve eaten at McDonald’s a total of two times in my life. Even so, this movie Fast Food Nation was one big slap in the face. It’s gripping, powerful, shocking, and sheds light upon aspects of the meat industry I hadn’t even considered.

Previously to viewing this film, I was fully aware of the horrendous cruelty present in meat production, but what the movie brought to my attention was the people the industry affects. Director Richard Linklater alludes to his Slacker roots with several intermingling story lines all circulating around the production of Mickey’s (the McDonald’s equivalent) “Big Ones” (read: Big Mac). The movie explores the lives of the meat packers, the high powered executives, the cow farmers, the activists, and the hamburger-flippers who are all located in a small town in Colorado. The most poignant of the tales was that of a group of migrant workers. The film begs the question, how awful were their former lives for these people to view meat-packing jobs as opportunities? From tyrannical managers, dangerous conditions, and the corporate manipulation that continuously takes advantage of them, this storyline heightens awareness and evokes sympathy for the immigrant worker especially resonant at this time of political indecision.

The movie also explores the corrupt and deceitful nature of major corporations whose looming and influential presence prevents truth from reaching blissfully oblivious Americans. Social commentary in the film that will ring true with our school population is the idea that teenage activism is largely futile.

The younger generation’s activist antics (and even those of the credible organizations) pale in comparison to the major fast food powers that be. Fast food is an American institution and as long as greed trumps moral compasses, corruption will continue to exist.

On one hand, the scenes from the meat-packing factory reassured me of my decision to be vegetarian, but on the other hand, in the imposing shadow of corporations like Mickey’s, my social statement seems almost insignificant. Even so, the visuals present in the movie, such as scenes of cow livers sliding off conveyor belts and hacksaws mangling animal corpses, are too much for anyone to endure without rethinking their eating habits.

The movie has some idealistic monologues, and at times, it teeters on the brink of preaching, but it never veers into the realm of boring. If you keep sight of the fact that you are watching the movie version of Fast Food Nation, a harrowing nonfiction account of the meat industry, the speeches don’t seem out of place. I considered myself an informed person, yet I still walked out of the theater dizzy with realization. I suggest everyone sees this movie for the knowledge it lends, but also because it’s a compelling, fascinating, and impeccably well-done film.

Wow, tonight I'm actually glad that I don't live at my dad's anymore. The dead silence outside would be devastating. EVK will feel like a mortuary at brunch tomorrow. I know it's just self-righteous crap, but I'm gonna have to contain some homicidal rage if (well, when) I hear kids talking about this and giving me shit (i.e. mentioning it). Are they really so connected to their parents that they channel their college experiences and therefore are emotionally invested in the victory or defeat of their parent's alma mater. Because that's just lame. I know the common explanation is that someone grows up in a household and they see their mom and dad rooting for a team and just join in. I grew up in a Giants/Yankees household was I not supposed to be a dodgers fan? I like to see the yankees do well when they're not playing the dodgers (and get enough crap for it), but that's about it, no real attachment. I know that's a little different, city you live in vs college you went to. My mom went to ucla for grad school and I don't have any ucla sympathies because I wasn't the one who went there. It's one thing to prefer a team, to root for one of them, that's fine, but to have an ecstasy seizure in my face is another thing. For example, if some ucla student trashed birnkrant before the game, it'd be justified, but if some high shool kids did it that'd be dumb. In LA, a city without the NFL, who am I to say that people shouldn't become involved with one of the college teams that be. I'm not saying that, I'm just saying don't be ridiculous about it, it's fake. You can't expect to be taken seriously by people. Maybe your parents are happy that you care about their team, and the college kids of the college you root for, well they could care less that you do, but it's just annoying to those attached to the team you root against. It's not annoying like a Clippers fan in LA, actually that's not annoying, it's funny and absurd. Or annoying like a guy in a Bonds jersey at Dodgers Stadium, that's not even annoying. You are not annoyed by him, he is a catalyst for your adrenaline, he's necessary. Some six year old in a ucla cheerleader outfit is just annoying, and gross. I might be the only person who gives a shit about this. and I actually don't even care that much. After all, if I didn't have the extenuating circumstances that I do, I bet I'd have rooted for ucla today and be in a pretty good mood right now. But I wouldn't be in some sort of extreme state of elation, because that would just be dumb.
I guess this whole rant is sort of mental preparation for the beating I'm going to get in English class Monday from both the kids and my teacher who hates usc and roots for ucla with a feverish passion because.... uh he went to ucsb which is a uc. And when ucla plays cal.....uhh.
I'll discuss the actual game later. Not to make excuses though. Oh! another breed I'm going to have to restrain myself around, those who are gonna blame something like the officiating. It kind of sucked, but take away the bad calls and the outcome would not have been different. Even the whole vince young's knee controversy bugs me. Each team has the same chances of getting a shitty call. Anyway, about today, USC choked, booty isn't great (fuck stats), ucla played better, they deserved the win. I wish them the best at the Emerald Bowl (aaahhahaha I still get the last laugh).

I spend 45 minutes every school day in meditation class. When I'm not napping, my meditation place?? is this red state wheat field (or leimert park wtf?). I find this hilarious. I guess it's my penguin power animal type of thing. I decided that if I never talked to my neighbors or went to the market or did whatever socializing people do when they live in wheat fields, I might like it. Weird weird weird.

Yes my truck has pillows.
Wow. I just had the most interesting hour long conversation with my grandparents about Futurama, garage sales, Whitney Houston, Herr's potato chips, how many cars were parked outside their house (19) and how many kids came to their house for halloween (54). Apparently my grandma counts everything now.
Highlight:
Gma: What did you dress up as?
Me: Oh, I just threw something together, Mike Tyson
Gma: OH! He's so cute! I love him I love him!
Me: hunhh
Gma: He's so cute. Oh, I used to see him around town, bopping about.

Does Mike Tyson really "bop about"? Maybe so, but on the other hand, this comes from a woman who haggled someone at a garage sale to get the price of a dog sweater down from $2 to $1.33.
I know I said I was over NJ, but I'm starting to miss it again. Good thing Ima goin back for Christmas.

UUUUHHHHHHHH AND WHAT IS IN LESS THAN HALF AN HOUR?? What I skipped collecting free candy for. That's serious.

My grades were good enough for cable, it's coming this weekend ah mah gah ah mah gah
In le classe de francais today we ate crepes and read cosmo sex articles out loud HAHA. Nous apprendons...je devine.
Also, my mom is like the last, last person to do this, but uh she turned into one of those creepy ladies who dresses her dog up for halloween. even worse, I think it's cute hahahah. I won't take a picture or something creepy like that though. it's not that severe.

Last night I was going to go walk over to a movie theater with my dad to see a midnigth movie. I'm lame and I was too lazy to get off the couch so my dad went with carol. On the way, they ran into some of the women's basketball team and.....Mark Sanchez, whom he knows from his classes. My dad then invited them to go to the movie with them and they did. SO BASICALLY, my extreme laziness prevented me from meeting and seeing a movie with Mark Sanchez (one of usc's qbs fo rthose who don't know). I don't think anyone who reads this actually cares, but, in short: I'm an idiot.

also, i went to dinner saturday night with a youtube personality: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=MissLolaRose
hahahahhahahahahaha

DEADWOOD

I am quite disillusioned about New Jersey. I want to be as far away as possible from anything in any way related to the state. I don't even think I'm going to see Clerks II. I'm lucky The Sopranos season is over and I might be the only one to say this, but February of 2007 is too soon.
I'm not exaggerating, I have the most fucked up grandparents in the world. But there were some positive events.
1. I'm practically RELATED to Mike Tyson. Apparently my grandpa met him and I also ate lunch with my like seventh cousins at HIS Friendly's. Angelenos don't know what that is unless they know about Mike Tyson, but it's this hick milk-bar restaurant thing. And Mike Tyson used to go there about every day when him and Robin Givens lived in New Jersey in the town adjacent to my grandparents'. So that's my claim to fame as unimpressive as it sort of is.
2. I saw the house in which Peter Dinklage grew up and his aunt was my grandpa's nurse.
I don't have a celebrity fixation, it's just that it's hilarious to think of Mike Tyson in Bernardsville, New Jersey eating ice cream at Friendly's after beating his wife. Well that's not hilarious, but it's ironic. And Peter Dinklage isn't even really a celebrity. I just really liked The Station Agent and Living In Oblivion.
3. I didn't get eaten by snakes in any swimming holes.
4. I saw Eight Below on the plane home and I cried. If you eliminate the human acting parts of the movie and just leave the dog parts, you're pretty much left with the one of the best movies ever.
5. My mom and I became addicted to Deadwood.
6. I found out that my grandmom has a friend in the fish market of the grocery store named Mohammed who gives her elaborately wrapped presents. She said, "Oh, we have this thing going"
OH one of the worst things about my trip was that my Grandmom thinks vegetarianism is worse than running over a child, along with every other person in New Jersey, so to prevent her from having some panic attack, I had to eat chicken one night. It was disgusting. My mom was about to slap me because I kept rubbing my belly and saying I had a dead animal in it.

I found out yesterday that I'm leaving for New Jersey tonight. I love New Jersey so normally I would be ecstatic, but circumstances being what they are (three out of four of my grandparents have cancer, infections, and/or are about to have surgeries and the fourth probably won't remember who I am) I am not.
Here are nice pictures that Britta took of Brookside, my second favorite town in the world: http://jeweledplatypus.org/pixels/stack/brookside/1/
Speaking of Britta, she's LEAVING me to go be some computer bigshot Yahoo's youngest employee probably ever in San Francisco and she's missing Hawaii and I'm pretty devastated. She's so smart, it's ridiculous. No one would actually believe we were related unless they saw us living in the same house. EXCEPT she';s not even going to be living in the same house, because she;'s LEAVING. Just like Sarah left and doesnt' come home and is off in some state and city and house that is not where I am.
I went to Sequoia this past weekend and saw HUMONGOUS trees. They were incredible.
I'm not going to see my dog for like four weeks except for two days in between two trips. That's depressing.
OH and I have to miss Bollywood night at the Hollywood Bowl. LAME.

I didn't get to see the game because I was off pulling my groin muscles to an extent that I can barely walk at soccer camp
BUT:

SWEDEN ADVANCED!
Which was pretty much ensured unless Trinidad and Tobago beat Paraguay, which would have made me happy as well. But it does make me happy to think of all my cousins who are taking off their clothes and eating some rye crackers in celebration.

EDIT 6/26:

no usa
no sweden
no mexico
no netherlands

EDIT 6/27:
AAUGH! Nothing has been going my way since June 9. I am not emotionally attached to any team left. I abhor four of them: Argentina, Italy, England, and Brazil. So I guess I'll resort to rooting for the teams opposite those. And if they ever play each other, I'll just yell "fuuuuckk" whenever anything happens. Today I was watching the Ghana game and I realized that my dad's classes have been able hear me from upstairs, and I was more agitated than usual because I was hungry and I couldn't go down and get eggs and beans because there was a class on my way to the kitchen including the students on the stairwell. I guess I'm sort of rooting for Portugal for the win, but the fact that I'm basing that on their nice uniforms is kind of sad. I can't get attached to any other team though. The only country I've been to in the remaining eight countries is France, but they've won too recently so I don't feel like rooting for them. I AM English, but barely. And I AM technically German, although my aunt claims that the Germans we descend from were immigrants from Sweden so we're not really German, we're just more Swedish. That's sort of being obsessive about Sweden. But if you saw that guy in the blonde viking lady braids they kept focusing on during the Sweden vs. Germany match, can you really blame her? My aunt once sent in her DNA to find out which one of seven original humans she descended from or something like that. Speaking of people who people focus on, hahah seamless transition, I cracked up today more than I thought possible with the score as it was about the field day the announcers, rick monday and whatshisname, had with russell martin and his moustache which was shaved off inbetween innings. It was pretty hilarious but they wouldn't shutup, they even got out their special tool that makes drawings on the screen and were circling his face. I usually like to watch the games they announce on mute, but since the game was past all seriousness and the heat was getting to me, I really could not stop laughing. Ohhhh and then one of them made some comment about some player kicking their dog if he went one for three to emphasize that one for three is a bad day for joe mauer. But then five minutes later they had to correct themselves and say, "you know I really don't think he kicks his dog, for any animal rights people who might be offended." Wow I laughed a lot. My dog would probably like it if you kicked it. I step on it on accident and it gets all excited because you sort of semi-acknowledged that it exists. Not that Frank's neglected, he's actually extremely paid attention to by my mom. She sings to him all the time. Frank loves hummus, which is my favorite food along with eggs and beans. That was a longer edit than I expected.
